While toaster ovens have been around for a while, air fryers or oil-less fryers are relatively new. The latter has become popular very quickly because of its ability to cook foods like they were deep fried but without the need for much oil, making it a healthy cooking appliance. If you like fried food but want to watch you calorie intake from oils and fats, then air frying is the way to go. However, an air fryer can only do that – make certain foods like french fries and wings crispy. You still need your wall or countertop oven for broiling, baking and toasting. Unless you have a large kitchen, you probably wouldn’t want to make space for both. That’s where these two appliances can come in handy by replacing both. In the battle of the Cuisinart TOA-60 Vs Breville BOV900BSS, we find out which air fryer toaster oven is better.

The Cuisinart TOA-60 Air Fryer Toaster Oven and the Breville BOV900BSS The Smart Oven Air are both toaster ovens with an in-built air fryer function. The Breville is the more advance and expensive, model of the two but you may find that the Cuisinart will suit your needs just fine. To see whether the Breville BOV900BSS is worth the extra cost VS the Cuisinart TOA-60, read on.

Cuisinart TOA-60 Air Fryer Toaster Oven Features

Cuisinart TOA-60 Air Fryer Toaster Oven with LightThe Cuisinart TOA-60 Air Fryer Toaster Oven is a premium countertop oven that gives you 7 ways to cook your food – Bake, Broil, Warm, Toast, Convection Bake, Convection Broil, and Air Fry.

  • It is a high powered air fryer toaster oven combo rated at 1800 watts and a 0.6 Cu. Ft. capacity.
  •

  • It measures 15.50″ L x 16.00″ W x 14.00″ H and weighs 21 lbs.
  •

  • To give you an example of how spacious the interior is, you can AirFry up to 3 lbs of foods like wings, chicken tenders, and fish and chips, toast 6 slices of bread, bake a 4 lb chicken or cook a 12″ pizza.
  •

  • The maximum food weight rating for the Air Fryer takes into account that there should be no overcrowding so that every piece of air fried food turns out golden and crispy. The Air Fry function uses super hot air with the fan to accomplish this but the air has to circulate properly all around the food.
  •

  • The two convection modes are in addition to the normal bake and broil function, as these use a circulating fan to move the hot air all around the inside for more even cooking. The fan spins at an extra high speed during air frying.
  •

  • The control panel consists of 4 manual dials in addition to the oven light button. The first dial is the timer which goes all the way from “OFF” to 60 minutes. You turn the oven on by turning the timer dial and once the timer reaches the off position, it will automatically turn off. A red indicator light will be on if the oven is on.
  •

  • The next dial is the temperature control and it goes from “warm” all the way to 450° F. The third dial is for selecting the cooking function and the fourth dial is for selecting the toast shade when you use the toast function. The choice here is light, medium or dark. When you use the Toast function with shade selector you do not use the timer dial. The thermostat will automatically toast your bread or buns to the selected shade and turn it off when done.
  •

  • Included with the oven is a wire oven rack, a baking pan and an air fryer wire basket. All these can also be bought individually if needed and there’s also a 11″ Pizza Stone sold separately.
  •

  • There are 4 heating elements on the top and 2 on the bottom. The extra pair on the top is for air frying, as you need very hot air to cook the food to a crisp. When you open the oven door in the middle of cooking, the oven turns off and turns on again as soon as you close it.
  •

  • There are 2 slots through which you can slide the trays and basket. The top one can be used for either the wire rack alone for holding a casserole dish, cake pan or ramekins, or with the fryer basket for air frying, or with the baking pan for cookies. If you use the fryer here, you should keep the baking tray right beneath it to catch drippings and bits of food, as there is no separate removable drip tray. You can keep the wire rack in the bottom slot even if you’re not using it or you can use the rack in this slot for baking something that you want a nice dark bottom crust on, like a custard baked in ramekins or to make a pizza on a pizza stone.
  •

  • If using a rectangular cake pan set on the wire rack for baking cakes, the maximum size would be 9″ by 12″.
  •

  • The oven is made of stainless steel with the interior being non-stick and easy to clean and there’s an oven light inside to help you see how a dish is progressing when the oven is on. There’s a button on the control panel to turn it on and off.
  •

    Pros

  • The air fryer function can be used for more than just making foods that would otherwise be deep fried. For example, you can make a roast chicken or pork roast using it and the outside will be golden brown while leaving the inside juicy and tender. You can also experiment with using a combination of the other convection functions for these same dishes and see which you like better.
  • You’ll find yourself using it often since it replaces a convection oven, toaster and air fryer, and is simple to use.
  • It does not need preheating and it cooks very fast.
  • There is a removable drip tray for catching grease drippings and food crumbs.
  •

    Cons

  • There’s a learning curve when choosing which temperatures to use for various dishes, so some trial and error is needed. The most common complaint from a few users in this regard is that food may get burned, but other users rave about it. remember not to preheat the oven before putting the food in.
  • The basket and tray are not dishwasher safe, so to minimize cleanup time, you may want to spray the basket with a bit of oil and cover the tray with foil.
  • There are no rotisserie or microwave options.

Breville BOV900BSS The Smart Oven Air Features

Breville - The Smart Oven Air Convection Toaster/Pizza OvenThe Breville BOV900BSS Smart Oven Air is a larger and more advanced model than the Cuisinart and so it naturally costs more.

  • You get 13 pre-programmed cooking functions, including Broil, Bake, Roast, Toast, Bagel, Airfry, Pizza, Cookies, Slow Cook, Warm, Proof, Reheat, and Dehydrate.
  •

  • There is one particularly useful cooking function here that is absent in the Cuisinart model and that is the Dehydrate function. Easily dry fresh fruit and vegetables to make healthy snacks for your family and use up excess produce from your garden to be eaten whenever you want. If dehydrating foods is important to you and you don’t want to get a separate dehydrator, then this oven will give you great value. If you only want to dehydrate fish and meat and not fruits and veggies, and you’re not interested in air frying, then the Oster French Door Digital Oven is a good buy too.
  •

  • If you like making bread at home but don’t want to buy a breadmaker, then as long as you mix and knead the ingredients yourself, this oven has a “proof” function for proofing your dough before you bake it using the bake setting.
  •

  • The slow cook function replaces a separate slow cooker by cooking a dish on a steady low temperature for a long time. There are two slow cooker settings to choose from – the low setting for 4 – 72 hours, and the high setting for 2 – 12 hours.
  •

  • The Bagel function is great for toasting bagels because the regular toast function can dry them out and is best for just toasting bread and sandwiches. The Bagel function gives you a freshly baked textured instead.
  •

  • This is a 1 cu.ft. oven that measures 17.2 x 21.4″ x 12.8″ with the interior cavity measuring 16” x 13.5” x 7”. It is made of brushed stainless steel for a sleek and modern addition to your kitchen. The inside is non-stick.
  •

  • This 1800 watt oven can handle roasting a 14 lb turkey, toasting 9 slices of bread, a 13″ pizza, and can hold a 12 cup muffin tray, or 5.5 qt Dutch Oven or a 13” x 9” baking pan.
  •

  • Along with the oven you also get a 13” non-stick round pizza pan, 2 oven racks, a broil rack, a 13” x 9” roasting Pan, and an Air Fry/Dehydrating mesh basket.
  •

  • This oven features an incredible 8 rack positions with helpful markings on the door to tell you which position is best for which function. If you want, you can use more than one rack position at a time to cooking for large gatherings. For example, you can do two or three pizzas at a time or you can dehydrate up to 4 trays of food. You will need to get more trays and baskets to do this, but they are all available to buy separately online.
  •

  • A “Rotate Remind” feature is there so that you turn your pans halfway through the cooking cycle to ensure everything gets cooked or browned the same. You can also use this feature when you’re cooking lots of food using more than one rack position to ensure that each pan or basket gets moved to a higher or lower position after some minutes.
  •

  • This unit features the Breville Element IQ functionality. It has 6 different quartz heating elements – 4 on the top and 2 at the bottom, and each turns on or off and rises or lowers in temperature based on the cooking function you have selected and/or temperature you have set. Using PID temperature control, the oven provides precise and stable cooking so that the interior temperature never overshoots the maximum temperature at which it’s supposed to cook and it never goes below a minimum temperature either. This is how you consistently get a perfectly cooked dish.
  •

  • You get a customizable “Phase Cook” feature so that you can run two different cooking modes back to back. For example, if you want to grill a steak with a nice browning on the outside while the inside remains juicy, you can first broil it on high heat to seal in the juices and then program it to switch to bake at a lower temperature to finish the cooking.
  •

  • The convection fan works at two speeds to deliver even cooking results. It automatically runs on high speed if you select the roasting, air frying or dehydrating functions, while the rest run on the lower fan speed.
  •

  • This is a digital backlit LCD display air fryer toaster oven with buttons and control dials to program it and while you confirm those settings on the display.
  •

  • There’s an interior oven light to turn on and off using a button to check on food when the door is closed. It also turns on when you open the door and the timer pauses as well.
  •

  • You first select the appropriate cooking function with the first dial. Then a temperature dial allows you to select any temperature between 80°F and 480°F, so you can proof bread and dehydrate meat, fish, fruits and veggies, and you can air fry almost anything. You also use this dial for toast shade selecting when you also select the toast function. You use the timer dial to set cooking time or select the number of slices of bread when you use the toast function.
  •

  • You can switch between Celsius and Fahrenheit temperature settings and there is an ON/OFF button to start or stop cooking. The audible beep that sounds when cooking is done can be volume controlled or turned off if you want it to be completely silent.
  •

  • There is a removable crumb tray for easy clean up.
  •

    Pros

  • The large number of functions means that you can do very precise things for each dish and get great results everytime.
  • You can alter settings in the middle of cooking without interrupting the process or restarting.
  • Large capacity that’s good for entertaining.
  • Big and easy to read digital display.
  • The two phase cooking and reminder to rotate your pans halfway through are very convenient features.
  •

    Cons

  • It is a large oven and you’ll need at least 4 inches clearance on all sides and 6 inches on top to allow the heat to dissipate.
  • The oven can be a bit noisy when the convection fan is running at the higher speed.
  • While the air fryer function does do a good job, it is not as efficient as a regular air fryer. If you place a drip pan under the air frying basket it blocks the bottom heating elements from directly heating the food. However, you can still use this function well with a bit of trial and error in the beginning.
  • Every function starts with a preheat and if you put in your food at the beginning or in the middle of preheat, the actual cooking cycle will only start once the preheating is over. This is mostly a nuisance when toasting something, as a regular toaster oven starts toasting as soon as you turn it on and so the bread is done very fast. In this Breville Smart Oven Air, the whole toasting process will take longer.
  • There are no rotisserie or microwave options.
  • There is no recipe book with this oven so you’ll have to Google “Breville smart oven air recipes” to find some.

Should you Buy the Cuisinart Air Fryer Toaster Oven or the Breville Smart Oven Air?

If you have been reading so far then you know by now that the Breville seems like an appliance that can do magic because of all the cooking options. It does seem like it can replace several other appliances like a toaster oven, convection oven, air fryer, food dehydrator and slow cooker. If you think that you’ll use most of these functions then the Breville Smart Oven Air is probably a good buy. However, be very sure that you will use most of them because its price puts it in the luxury bracket.

You should also know that if you’re buying a combination toaster oven air fryer mainly for the air frying then the Breville doesn’t boast the best design for it. If you’ve already used a proper air fryer then you may be disappointed with the results. In this case, the Cuisinart is a better buy. It cannot dehydrate foods, proof your bread dough, or slow cook that tough cut of meat, but for air frying, toasting, baking, broiling and warming, it will do a great job and at a much lower price.

The Breville does come with many more accessories and is better at cooking food precisely for most of the selected functions, so it’s a better buy for the serious cook. It’s also great for beginners who like to just set it and forget it. There’s every likelihood that because most of its cooking pre-programs do such a good job, you’ll use it almost everyday for some dish or the other. It is also a good buy if you like to entertain often because you can cook large quantities at a time.

If you’re like most cooks that wants an appliance just for regular family meals with the option to also get crispy and tasty results without using much oil, then the Cuisinart will do nicely. You do have to be patient with it in the beginning and maybe bear with a few overcooked items in order to find the right temperature and setting by some trial and error. This is the most common complaint among the Cuisinart air fryer toaster oven model’s reviews.

    1. I bought TOA-60 and It does have a learning curve. On my full size oven cooking in convection mode it automatically reduces oven temp by 25-50 degrees vs what I selected. Also I had a 5.8 quart air fryer and I could only get four chicken thighs and took up a lot of counter space. (it died). The TOA-60 has its knobs on top so it saves even more space. Plus I threw out my toaster over with convection because this does a better job, and saves more space. I like the TOA-60 because its a real air fryer and the other is not. My CONs I wish it was digital and the would light stayed on when you open door
Pro it does have does have a removable crumb tray.

    3. I am very concerned about this purchase. I have an LG oven where the dials are on top. When the oven is open, the heat has melted the dials! I am afraid that this will happen also with this Cuisinart t60, as the dials are in the same place. Has someone had this problem

      Reply
      • We haven’t heard of this problem before! You should know that any oven should not be kept open for more than a few seconds while on. Only open to check the food inside or to slide the dish in or out. In addition, the Cuisinart’s dials are made of steel and not plastic, so they’re highly unlikely to melt.

    4. Thanks for the article. I have a Breville Toaster/convection I have had for several years and love it. We use it every day. But wanted an air fryer, picked up the Cuisinart Oven/fryer at Costco but can’t have both on my counter so need to make a decision. Love my Breville oven but don’t think I would be happy with results of the Breville Air Oven. Do I just wait until an improved oven comes out
And just stay with the Breville Oven I have and return this Cuisinart to Costco. BIG DECISION

      • Thanks for reading. Breville has made small improvements to the existing Air Oven recently so it doesn’t look like they plan to come out with a new model anytime soon. It all depends on what you’ll use the oven most for!

    5. In the con section of the Breville, you mentioned about the drip tray blocking the bottom heat, does it mean the Cuisinart does not have the same problem? Breville has a smaller version out BOV860, does it work similar to the BOV900? Thank you.

      • The included drip tray does NOT block the heat. It is under the heating element, which is why it is difficult to clean if there is drip. If you want to catch the drippings before it hits the tray, you may use another drip pan under the fryer basket, in which case you will block the bottom heating element. Another option is to line the drip tray with foil so you won’t have to clean it frequently.

        • Thank you for comparing for everyone!! I really want one that does toasting/convection and frying well…super busy mom that doesn’t time things perfectly so smart unit is helpful but if less user friendly re: cleaning then it becomes a con….. re: frying and dripping …is that not the same issue for the Cuisinart (thought it heats from top and bottom as well). Also do either have dishwasher friendly parts?

          Reply
          • Cleaning can be easy for both units. The Cuisinart comes with a removable crumb tray that’s under the heating unit so you just remove and wipe or wash. The Breville doesn’t and there’s no slot underneath the heating element for you to slide in your own tray. If you add a tray in the lowermost slot above the element it will reduce the effect of heat from there. An easy fix is to buy a non-stick oven mat to slide in under the heating element that sits right on the bottom of the oven floor. Then you just have to remove the mat to clean.
The Breville trays and other removable parts are all dishwasher safe. On the other hand, the fryer basket and crumb tray on the Cuisinart are labeled as NOT dishwasher safe while the other trays are safe. HOWEVER, there are several users that say that they’ve washed all trays in the dishwasher and they come out just fine.

      • The 65 model includes a “dual cook” function that’s absent in the 60. This function allows you to combine two cooking functions at two different temperatures consecutively – great for recipes that call for multiple cooking steps and you don’t want to set a timer in the middle as a reminder to switch. There is also a “dehydrating” function if you want to preserve fruits and veggies by dehydrating them. If these are something that would be useful to you in addition to the digital controls, then it would be worth the extra cost.

    6. Thank you for this very helpful review! The TOA65 checks everything I need, but I wish Cuisinart would’ve just added an extra inch to its capacity so that it can hold a 13 x 9 pan just like the Breville. The ability to hold my casserole pans and muffin tins is why I decided to get the Breville instead.

    7. I noticed in the article that it was stated the Breville was not as efficient as a regular air fryer. So are you saying that a stand alone air fryer does better in air frying or is there another combination type brand better than the Breville. I am mainly interested in the Breville because it is non stick interior, more precise cooking times, air frying and can be used as slow cooker. I want to get rid of so many appliances on my counters.

      • Hi Connie, for what you want, i.e. replacing several appliances with one, the Breville Smart Oven Air is a great choice. It does lots of things well. However, if you do a LOT of frying and want very crispy results each time, a dedicated air fryer will do a better job. For most people, the Breville Air Fryer Oven is worth the purchase.

    8. Had gotten an air fryer and really wasn’t that impressed and was looking for a better one – they say you only get what you pay for – so saw this most expensive Breville with convection and really was thinking about it and then saw it said wasn’t as good as an air fryer by itself so guess now I’m done – don’t want to air fry things and they aren’t crispy and flavorable. My son had discouraged me about any of these items but I wasn’t going to listen to him but as I said think I will for now just stick to deep frying with good oil.
